Preserve America Community:
Elizabethtown, Kentucky

The original lots and streets of Elizabethtown (population 22,542) were laid out in 1797. Abraham Lincoln's parents were among the community's early settlers, and Lincoln was born about 12 miles away in what is today Hodgenville.

Downtown Elizabethtown is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district, and the city hosts walking tours with guides portraying historic figures each summer.

The rehabilitation of the historic State Street Theater (1942)-one of the few remaining examples of Art Deco architecture in Hardin County-is a cornerstone project in the continuous revitalization of downtown Elizabethtown.
