Washington D.C. — President Bush last Friday appointed three people to serve on the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service. The three are Dorothy A. Johnson of Grand Haven, Mich.; Cynthia Boich of Newport Coast, Calif.; and Henry C. Lozano of Forest Falls, Calif.
The Corporation, a federal agency, administers Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America, programs which engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet community needs. Unlike most government agencies, the Corporation has a Presidentially appointed Board of Directors that helps set the overall direction and policy of the agency.
"We're pleased that the President has made these appointments so that we can continue to strengthen national and community service in America," said Corporation Board Chairman Stephen Goldsmith. "This is a critical time for the Corporation. These directors will help us expand the reach and effectiveness of our agency and programs."
Of the three appointees, only Johnson has served on the Corporation's Board before. Because the appointments were made when the Senate was not in session, the three will serve until January 2005, when a new Congress takes office.
David Eisner, who earlier this month took over as CEO of the Corporation, said he is looking forward to working with the new Board members. "Dottie, Cynthia, and Henry all bring a fresh perspective and different expertise to the table. I think their combined skills will add greatly to the ability of the Board to guide the Corporation."
Johnson began her tenure on the Corporation's Board in 1998. She is president of Ahlburg Company, a philanthropic consulting group, and President Emeritus of the Council of Michigan Foundations, which she led from 1975-2000. She has been on Kellogg Company's Board of Directors since 1998 and has served over the years on the boards of many leading nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, including the Council of Foundations, the Foundation Center, Independent Sector, and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Boich has held executive positions in a number of commercial real estate, investment, energy, and consumer product marketing firms, including C&B Investments, B.T.C.T. Inc., M.M. Coal, and Boich Companies. She is a founder of Charter 100, an international women's leadership organization that connects businesses with volunteer organizations, and a member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona Heart Institute Foundation. In addition, she has a strong interest in building partnerships between community and faith-based groups. From 1985-1988, Boich served on the Presidential Advisory Committee on Small and Minority Business Ownership under President Reagan.
Lozano has long been involved in the campaign against drug and alcohol abuse. He is President and CEO of Californians for Drug-Free Youth, Inc., and former Executive Director of Southern California Teen Challenge. Over the years, Lozano has been a member of numerous governmental advisory bodies and currently serves on the President's Advisory Commission on Drug-Free Communities. He also has worked with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Justice, U.S. Department of Interior, White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, National Hispanic/Latino Community Prevention Network, California Attorney General's Office, and California Department of Education.
The Corporation for National and Community Service provides opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to serve their communities and country through three main programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America.
