Corporation CEO David Eisner was interviewed today (September 19) by Shepard Smith, the anchor of the TV show “Studio B,” on the Fox News Network. During the five-minute national cable television interview, David talked about the need for volunteers in affected communities in the Gulf states, and the work that AmeriCorps members and Senior Corps volunteers are doing – as well as the number of people in national service across the country who are part of the response efforts involving evacuees from the area. David described the response to Hurricane Katrina as the largest volunteer effort in history, with 6,000 people in AmeriCorps and Senior Corps responding thus far.
Alabama
- AmeriCorps members with the Employers Child Care Alliance have been assisting the local American Red Cross shelter by working with children, transporting supplies, and assisting wherever needed in the Auburn/Opelika area.
- The AmeriCorps Instructional Support Team in Greenville is preparing and serving meals with area churches, as well as, assisting the Department of Human Resources in crisis counseling in the afternoons.
Louisiana
- 30 Caddo Council on Aging RSVP volunteers in Shreveport take care of evacuees’ daily needs by washing clothes, giving directions to area services or just being a sounding board at the LSU shelter in the Shreveport area.
New York
- Members of the Community HealthCorps*VISTA team in New York City are helping to provide medications and medical supplies to health centers in the affected states and coordinating a clothing drive for victims of the hurricane
Oklahoma
- 2 VISTA members are assisting with collection, sorting, and distribution of donations.
- 4 VISTA members with the national Red Cross project at the Astrodome Shelter in Houston.
- 10 RSVP volunteers are working 12-hour shifts at Camp Gruber.
- A Foster Grandparent Program project organized volunteer opportunities for the Community Action Foundation.
Texas
- 27 Beaumont South East Texas Foster Grandparents are participating in the response efforts by assisting with 3 and 4 year olds in Head Start classrooms that have been set up for evacuees, assisting children of evacuees who are staying at a local hotel, and assisting at the Shepard Inn shelter in the Beaumont area.
- 71 Lubbock RSVP volunteers have participated in disaster response assistance by processing vouchers to provide boxes of food; sorting donated clothes, household good, and furniture; and providing many other services for the 408 evacuees at the Reese Center shelter in Lubbock.
- Middle States Region Habitat for Humanity VISTAs are supplying housing, furniture, and bedding to evacuee families in Bryan, Austin, and Pasadena.
Virginia
- RSVP Volunteers in Luray have helped collect clothing, water, baby diapers, and other necessary items, and they filled 300 boxes that were sent on to Harrisonburg for distribution to hurricane victims. Four volunteers have caravanned to New Orleans to support the efforts of the American Red Cross.
