National DNA Day 2008 Newsletter

Sign up now for DNA Day Previews, a monthly newsletter about National DNA Day 2008 brought to you by NHGRI's Education and Community Involvement Branch.

From November until April 2008, an e-mail of DNA Day Previews will keep recipients updated on DNA Day activities and resources. This information will also be available on the National DNA Day Web site each month at www.genome.gov/dnaday.

  • 2008: DNA Day ambassadors reach out to North Carolina high schools
    On April 25, young scientists from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, more than 200 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in medicine and science from several universities, will visit almost 180 schools as part of DNA Day, an annual commemoration of two key scientific breakthroughs - the discovery of DNA's double helix in 1953, and the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003.

    For the first time, NHGRI and the Education and Community Involvement Branch have created small-funding opportunities for groups to create National DNA Day programs in their community.

  • 2007: Fifth National DNA Day to Showcase Genomic Discoveries and Careers
    The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), marks the fifth annual National DNA Day on April 25 with events aimed at building high school students' awareness of genetics and genomics. April 25 commemorates both the discovery in 1953 of DNA's double helix and the 2003 completion of the Human Genome Project

  • 2007: DNA Gets Its Groove On: Genetic Scientists and Liz Lerman Dance Exchange Collaborate on Ferocious Beauty: GenomePDF file
    The Liz Lerman Dance Exchange investigates the startling realities of how knowledge of the genome will change the way we think about aging, perfection, ancestry, and evolution in its new work, Ferocious Beauty: Genome. The company developed the piece through collaborations with thirty-four genetic scientists and researchers from leading universities and government agencies across the country.

  • 2006: Genomic Researchers Head To New England Schools for National DNA Day
    On the fourth annual National DNA Day, researchers and professionals from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) will serve as DNA Day Ambassadors and fan out across the nation, with an emphasis this year on New England.

  • 2005: Students to Chat Online With Leading Genome Researchers For National DNA Day
    Students joined NHGRI's Francis Collins and other genomic pioneers in an online chatroom. Also, faculty, staff and postdoctoral fellows from the NHGRI will visit high schools across the country as part of the 2005 National DNA Day Ambassador Program.

    On April 30, dozens of researchers and staff from the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) headed back to high schools in rural and urban communities across the country to share with students some of the exciting research taking place at the National Institutes of Health.
