Eli Segal Fellowship

 

To honor Eli Segal and continue his work of advancing national service in America, the Corporation for National and Community Service is pleased to announce the Eli Segal Fellowship program. Eli Segal was a giant in the national service movement. He was a key architect of the 1993 national service legislation and served as the first CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service. As CEO he successfully launched AmeriCorps and managed the creation of a new federal agency that united the longstanding Senior Corps and VISTA with the newer NCCC and Learn and Serve America programs. After leaving the Corporation, he remained a tireless friend and champion for service, serving on the boards of several organizations and helping build the AmeriCorps alumni movement.

In recognition of Eli Segal’s leadership and entrepreneurship, the Corporation’s Board of Directors has created the Eli Segal Fellowship. This prestigious fellowship will be open to AmeriCorps alumni who have exceptional leadership, drive, and commitment who will help to advance the mission and strategic goals of the Corporation.

Description

  • Eli Segal Fellows will help to advance the mission of national service and the strategic goals of the Corporation.
  • One Eli Segal Fellow will be selected each year.
  • Fellows will work closely with the CEO on projects that benefit the national service field.
  • Fellows will serve for one year and will earn $25,000 and full benefits, including health insurance, leave, and retirement benefits.
  • Fellows will carry out projects, advance their career development and gain a first-hand understanding of national service and the workings of a federal agency.

Eligibility

  • The Fellowship is open to men and women who have successfully completed a full-time term of service in AmeriCorps State National, AmeriCorps NCCC (1,700 hours) or AmeriCorps VISTA (one year)
  • The Fellowship will begin within three years of the end of the applicant’s AmeriCorps term of service. Exceptions may be made for full-time education or military or other service activities.
  • Aggressive outreach will be conducted to ensure that the pool of candidates accurately reflects the diversity of AmeriCorps members which complete their term of service every year.

Selection Process

  • Applications will be reviewed in a multi-stage process by Corporation staff.
  • A representative or designee of the Eli Segal family will participate in the selection
  • The final decision will be made by the CEO.

What kind of person, and what kind of experience is the Corporation looking for?

We are seeking an AmeriCorps Alum who demonstrates exceptional leadership, dedication to National Service and its ideals, a social entrepreneurial spirit, and effective communication and analytical skills. The successful applicant must have the ability to work independently and effectively at the highest level of the agency, make a positive contribution to the discussion of national service, and exercise political savvy in dealing with strategic partners. We seek an individual with a track record of project management skills and results.

What will the Fellow do?

The Fellow will work in the Office of the CEO and report to the CEO Chief of Staff. The CEO will identify specific projects for the Fellow which may include working on the AmeriCorps Week Team, initiatives related to the Corporation's Strategic Plan, innovative programming around strategy, policy, and partnership development. The Fellow will spend time shadowing CEO and other executives, attending meetings, conducting limited travel, and participating in additional learning opportunities. During the second half of the year, the Fellow will work on a Corporation project that fits the Fellow's goals and ability's and the Corporation's needs

What kind of appointment is this?

This is a discretionary appointment.

How much does this pay?

The salary is $25,000 for a 10 to 12 month period. Full benefits are included.

Why would someone want to serve for 12 months for the same amount of money as for 10 months?

In some cases, the individual may want additional time to apply agency-wide learnings to complete his/her projects and/or advance new initiatives.

Will the Corporation pay relocation costs?

No.

Why are only full time (1700 hour) Alumni are eligible?

The full-time model represents the most intense immersion in the AmeriCorps program. In addition, Eli Segal was especially enthusiastic about full time AmeriCorps service. Therefore, the fellowship will go to a person who served full time in AmeriCorps.

Are NCCC and VISTA members eligible?

NCCC and VISTA members are eligible, if they have successfully served a full term.

What are the eligibility requirements?

The Fellow must be a U.S. Citizen, must have completed a full time term of service in AmeriCorps within the last three years (some exceptions may be granted- see next question), and must be available to start at Corporation Headquarters in November 2008.

What kind of exceptions will be granted?

Those alumni who were enrolled in full time studies, in active military service and/or other full time service (for example, Peace Corps) may be exempt from the requirement of completing AmeriCorps within the last three years.

Are CNCS Staff who are AmeriCorps alumni eligible, if they meet the other requirements?

No.

Does Veteran’s Preference apply?

This is a discretionary appointment. Veteran’s Preference is inapplicable although Veterans are encouraged to apply.

Is there an education requirement?

The Fellow must have a high school diploma or a GED.

Does the Segal Family know about this Fellowship? Are they involved?

The Segal Family are involved and will participate in the selection. The fellow will learn about Eli’s vision, activities and ideals through regular meetings with family members and other influential individuals in the Washington, DC, and Boston areas.

How will the individual be selected?

Application packages will be reviewed for eligibility and completeness. Those applications that are complete and eligible will proceed to review and scoring by a team of CNCS Staff. Telephone interviews will be conducted with a group of semi-finalists. Finalists will be selected for interviews with the CEO. The CEO will make the final decision. A Segal Family member or designee will be involved in the selection process. Announcement of the Segal Fellow is expected late October 2008.

What will the reviewers look for in the applications?

Reviewers will be rating the applications on the following competencies: commitment to service, flexibility, ability to work independently, effective communication skills, vision, entrepreneurial spirit and analytical thinking.

How can we be sure that the applicant pool and selection will reflect the diversity of AmeriCorps members who serve in AmeriCorps?

Aggressive outreach will be conducted to ensure that the pool of candidates accurately reflects the diversity of eligible AmeriCorps members.
