VISTA Background Checks

I'm Ready To Serve in AmeriCorps VISTA!

AmeriCorps VISTA offers 6,500 opportunities to fight poverty with passion at more than 1,200 projects across the country.

Advanced Opportunity Search

AmeriCorps VISTA requires a criminal history background check to ensure community members with whom we work are protected, particularly children, individuals with disabilities, and individuals over 60 years old. Fingerprinting is mandatory.

We are investigating for past sexual offenses and violent crimes. Minor offenses, unless impacting on your assignment, will not bar you from service.

This background check will entail a search of the National Sex Offenders Registry and an FBI criminal background check. This check requires your submitting fingerprints on official fingerprint cards to AmeriCorps VISTA.

If AmeriCorps VISTA is unable to complete the FBI criminal background check prior to Pre-Service Orientation and the taking of the oath, you may be provisionally sworn in as a VISTA member until the research is complete. Until the background check is complete and you are cleared, you will not be permitted to work with children, individuals with disabilities, or individuals over 60 years of age, without supervision.

To avoid delays in processing your clearance for service, you may consider obtaining fingerprints prior to arriving at Pre-Service Orientation.

Where To Receive Fingerprinting Services

Fingerprinting services are available at most local police departments, sheriff's offices, or any public applicant Live Scan site. You must submit rolled fingerprints on two paper fingerprint cards, FD-258, or Live Scan fingerprints.

Valid Photo ID Needed

Applicants must present valid government issued photo identification when being fingerprinted. Expired identification information will not be accepted.

Varying Fees for Fingerprinting Services

You may be charged to have your fingerprints taken. Since this fee varies among locations, please review the cost before going to a fingerprinting site. If you are charged, please retain your receipt and present it at the VISTA registration table at Pre-Service Orientation for reimbursement. You will need a receipt to be reimbursed.
