Recruitment for Epidemiologists

Office of Population Genomics

Department of Health and Human Services
National Institutes of Health
National Human Genome Research Institute

The Office of Population Genomics of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health (NIH) Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking a highly-qualified doctorally- or medically-trained epidemiologist to design, conduct and manage research efforts to apply genomic technologies on a population basis to promote health and prevent disease.

NHGRI has traditionally developed genomic tools and resources (such as high-throughput sequence analysis used in the Human Genome Project and International HapMap project) and is working actively to apply these tools to clinical and population research. The emerging discipline of population genomics at NHGRI, as described at www.genome.gov/PopulationGenomics, currently involves:

  1. Identification of genes influencing common diseases in the Genes, Environment, and Health Initiative (GEI) and the Genetic Association Information Network (GAIN).
  2. Identification and implementation of standardized phenotypic and exposure methods for genome-wide studies in the PhenX Toolkit project.
  3. Application of genome-wide studies to biorepositories with electronic medical records in the eMERGE network.
  4. In-depth phenotypic analyses of putative causal genetic variants in population-based cohort studies (RFA HG-07-014).
  5. Extraction, curation, and dissemination of a detailed catalog of genome-wide association studies and their key findings.

This growing portfolio of research requires a dedicated team with extensive expertise in traditional epidemiology, sufficient to guide geneticists unfamiliar with epidemiologic concepts in developing the most rigorous population-based study designs.

The selected candidate will provide scientific expertise in epidemiology, genetics, clinical medicine and related areas to undertake, collaborate and advise on investigations of the genetics of common, complex diseases. (S)He will also be responsible for identifying priorities for future population genomic research, including development of major new Institute initiatives in collaboration with the research community.

NHGRI epidemiologists also have primary responsibility for at least one major Institute-initiated study, on which they serve as Project Officer and function as an active member of the study Steering Committee and its subcommittees in both an administrative and scientific role.

To obtain the vacancy announcement for this position, go to USAJobs and search under announcement #NHGRI-08-276655. You may also visit the NIH Web site at: Jobs @ NIH. Please read the announcement carefully for complete application procedures. Applications must be received by the closing date of the announcement.

This is a full time permanent position offering, GS-601-13-15, with benefits including health and life insurance, retirement, and sick and annual leave. U.S. citizenship is required.

Questions pertaining to scientific responsibilities and expertise can be referred to Dr. Teri Manolio at manolio@nih.gov.
