Janis Mullaney is the executive officer of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). In this position, Mullaney oversees virtually every management function of the institute, from budget and the administrative offices to information technology and human relations. As a senior leader of the institute, Mullaney maintains the organization's infrastructure so research can proceed.

A Washington, D.C. native, Mullaney earned bachelor of science degree and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Maryland, College Park. She served the Food and Drug Administration for 10 years before joining the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1981.

Over the next 23 years, Mullaney held administrative positions at a number of NIH institutes - National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, NIH Office of Intramural Research, and National Cancer Institute (NCI). Mullaney is a recipient of the 1999 and 2001 NIH Director's Award, and the 1998, 2002 and 2004 NIH Merit Award.

In 2004, she retired from government service. Not one to stay idle, however, Mullaney joined the Foundation for the NIH as senior advisor for public-private partnerships. In that role, she led the foundation's activities in NCI projects supported by $10 million from the Avon Foundation, and negotiated an $8 million schizophrenia research initiative between the National Institute of Mental Health and the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb.

When selected for the executive officer position at NHGRI in January 2008, Mullaney made the switch back to federal employment.
