1998: Committee on Genetic Testing

Computer image of a microarrayIn June 1998, the Secretary of Health and Human Service’s Advisory Committee on Genetic Testing – also known as the SACGT – was formed. The Task Force on Genetic Testing and the Joint NIH/DOE Committee to Evaluate the Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications Program of the HGP had recommended that the committee be formed. These groups identified the need for broad-based public policy development to help the nation address the benefits and challenges of genetic knowledge and genetic testing.
