University of Southern California Bioinformatics Institute in Genomic Science

Application Deadline Web Site
Application Deadline: March 31, 2008 Bioinformatics Institute in Genomic Science [cegs.usc.edu]

Overview

The USC Center of Excellence in Genomic Science is one of nine centers nationwide funded by the National Institutes of Health. Our Center's emphasis is on genetic variation in human populations and the relationship of that variation to human health.

The 2008 Summer Institute will take place from June 9 through August 1, 2008. This institute will, as the name indicates, be concerned with bioinformatics and genomics. These disciplines are central to all aspects of biological and biomedical science.

The BIGS Summer Program does not offer laboratory research experience. Instead, through formal and informal coursework, group projects and a seminar program, students explore a wide variety of topics in computational biology, bioinformatics and molecular biology.

Program Highlights

  • Courses in Computational Genome Analysis and Bioinformatics

A USC 4-unit course in genomics and bioinformatics will be offered, BISC 478, as well as a 2-unit course, BISC 577, in which small teams of students work with a faculty member to explore selected areas of modern biology. Both credit and non-credit options are available. There will also be weekly seminars for the institute students given by research faculty.

  • Mentoring by Faculty from the Center of Excellence in Genomic Science.

  • Formal and informal training in Genomics, Molecular Biology, and Bioinformatics, through seminars and group activities.

  • Financial Support for Qualified Minority Students.

Eligibility

Both undergraduates (normally at the junior or senior level), and beginning graduate students are eligible. Appropriate fields of study include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering. We especially invite applications from members of those minority groups who are under-represented in the sciences: African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans (including Alaska Natives) and natives of the Pacific Islands. To be eligible for minority support applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Stipend and Housing

The amount of support varies. Minority students are eligible to receive a stipend of up to $4000, on-campus housing, six units of course credit and a travel allowance. Support is also dependent upon satisfactory performance in the program.

How to Apply

Applications must be made online at: http://cegs.cmb.usc.edu/academics/bigs/BIGS.html.

Applicants must arrange for two Letters of Recommendation to be sent by e-mail or U.S. mail to:
