50th Anniversary Activities and Celebrations Worldwide

Events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix and the future of genetics and genomics for health and society.

  • Genomics Posters from the DOE Joint Genome Institute [jgi.doe.gov]
This 50th anniversary site from the Department of Energy (DOE) includes an introduction to genomics, an historical timeline and a dramatic, full-color educational poster entitled "Genomics: The Human Genome and Beyond, "available free to teachers and genomics professionals. The placemat-sized poster features basic information on DNA, protein synthesis, the genome sequencing process, comparative genomics, human differences and mutations, and genomics applications.

  • Genome: The Secret of How Life Works [genome.pfizer.com]
Currently at the Smithsonian, the exhibit will debut at the Smithsonian Institution and travel to 15 cities. Exhibit preview: April 13. Full exhibit opening: June 2003.

  • The Living Genome: Reading the Book of Life [hgsc.bcm.tmc.edu]
On Tuesday, April 22, the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center and the Houston Museum of Natural Science will open to the public a 3,000 square foot, genetics/genomics exhibit. A private opening and reception will take place on Monday, April 21st.

  • Cracking the Code of Life [pbs.org]
The companion Web site to the 2-hour NOVA program that links to an online webcast of Cracking the Code of Life and lists topics such as: gene manipulation, understanding heredity, nature vs. nurture, "Meet the Decoders, " and more.

  • DNA: 50 Years of the Double Helix [mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk]
From a conference for 500 scientists from around the globe, to the unveiling of a plaque at the Eagle pub where Crick and Watson did much of their talking, a line-up of celebrations big and small to mark the anniversary.
