Abstract:

This newsletter highlights the transition of determining payments for Medicare services from a retrospective cost-based reimbursement to a Prospective Payment System (PPS). It provides a description of PPS and discusses the variation of wages among skilled nursing facilities in rural and urban areas. It includes graphs and tables on the number of facilities, average hourly wages, and wage index values within metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas.
