The Variance of Rural Small-Town Hospitals' Financial Performance

This policy brief provides insights into why some rural small-town hospitals are financially successful and others are struggling with persistent financial difficulties. It includes a Medicare cost report analysis of 48 consistently profitable and 119 financially struggling rural hospitals, followed by comparative case studies of the financial performance of three pairs of representative hospitals.
