The first big cold front of the season is coming through Oklahoma, right on cue. As temperatures behind the front fall into the 50s with nighttime lows in the 30s, parts of the state will see their first frost of the season, and perhaps their first freeze. Normally, most of the northern half of the state sees their first freezing temperatures on or around Halloween, just about a week away. In about 1 out of 10 years, most places in Oklahoma have already seen their first freeze, while there is about a 1 out of 10 chance for most places to make it to mid-November without a freeze.
The earliest freeze of the fall season? That occurred on September 15 in 1993 at Freedom and Hammon, and in 1947 at Kenton. The latest fall freeze occurred in 1998 as Lake Eufala, Okemah, and Ardmore made it until December 21 before recording their first 32-degree temperature.
So while freezing temperatures may not be in the forecast for the next couple of days, they are likely not far behind.
