Overview: This Partnership is striving to
eliminate the risk of catastrophic fires and to prevent serious
illnesses and injuries to approximately 18,000 garment workers. The
agreement requires participant commitment to develop and maintain a
formal, written safety and health management system for each worksite
and associated staff housing, and to establish a joint
employer/employee safety and health team. Currently, 23 members of the
SGMA are participating in the Partnership.
Results: On an average, this Partnership participants' LWDI rate was
0.92, compared to 1.4 nationwide for SIC 23 (apparel & other textile
products) for CY2002. Partnership participants have hired or appointed
44 full-time safety and health managers. Partnership participants are
actively engaged in translating safety and health material into the
language of their workers (e.g., Mandarin, Korean, etc).
SGMA was a prime initiator in obtaining the Governor's Proclamation
designating the week of August 17, 2003 as Safety and Health Week. SGMA,
as a member of the Northern Marianas Alliance for Safety and Health,
played a major role in the Governor's 1st Annual Safety and Health
Conference, which attracted approximately 250 attendees. |

Overview: This
agreement focuses on establishment of safety and health management
systems, and identification of construction hazards and training needs.
Participants commit to having a safety manager at each construction
project, and employees will have representation on project safety teams
and participate in company safety audits.
Results: One of this Partnership's participants ensures that all
employees participate in site safety inspections and corrections at the
worksite. Another participant has corrected all identified safety
issues and is providing additional training for employees. The LWDI
rate for one Partnership participant decreased from 0.4 in 2002 to 0.0
in 2003.
Additionally, the 2004 evaluation report revealed that the participants involved in this
Partnership are doing regular safety inspections and have identified many hazards and
implemented immediate corrections. Two-hundred and eighty employees received confined
spaces, trenching, scaffolding, fall protection, and the OSHA 10-Hour Course. |
