Data Tables

The following two data tables present the number of regular public schools with membership and number of students in these schools in the 50 states and D.C. in each of the different combinations of lowest and highest grades offered.

  • Table 1. Number of regular public schools with membership in the 50 states and D.C., by grade range: School year 2005–06 (N = 86,792).

  • Table 2. Number of students in regular public schools with membership in the 50 states and D.C., by grade range: School year 2005–06 (N=47,957,475).

Averaged Freshman Graduation Rates by Race and Ethnicity—School Year 2004–05

The Averaged Freshman Graduation Rate (AFGR) is an estimate of the percentage of the entering high school freshman class graduating in four years. The 2004-05 school year rate equals the number of students receiving high school diplomas that year divided by the average membership of the 8th grade class in 2000-01, the 9th grade class in 2001-02, and the 10th grade class in 2002-03. Membership is averaged for these three grades to control for students who take more than four years to complete high school. The AFGR is not adjusted to account for students transferring into, or out of, public schools between the 2000-01 and 2004-05 school years. Because of this, changes in enrollment among relatively small groups of students can affect the reliability of the AFGR, in some cases producing graduation rate estimates of more than 100 percent. Rates of more than 100 percent have been excluded from the tables that are published on this site. Readers should interpret the published AFGRs cautiously when they include relatively small groups of students.
