Introduction

Located in the heart of the nation, Kansas, a 208 mile by 411 mile rectangle, is bordered by Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado and Oklahoma. Kansas ranks 15th in the nation with a total area of 82,282 square miles.

According to the 2000 Census, Kansas' population of 2,688,418 is mostly urban and is mainly concentrated in the east, with a third of the population located in its five largest cities: Wichita, Kansas City, Overland Park, Topeka (the State Capital) and Olathe. The residents of Kansas are predominantly white (83.1%) with growing populations of African Americans (5.7%) and Hispanics (7.0%). Native Americans constitute less than one percent of the population. The agriculture and airplane manufacturing industries dominate Kansas economics.

MCR Project Information

Technology Project

The objective is to continue the development of the technological resources and infrastructure of the MidContinental Region. Information will be provided to all members of the network that will assure that they have basic connectivity to the Internet and can take advantage of NLM and NN/LM resources and services. The RML web site will provide links to Internet service providers in the region, with an emphasis on the increasing number of free Internet service providers. Innovative technologies and resource will be identified and communicated to the region. A particular focus will be promoting new models of scholarly communication like PubMed Central and SPARC publishing initiatives.

Kansas Outreach

The main objective of the Kansas Liaison is to promote the use of the products and services of the National Library of Medicine and the National Network of Libraries. This is through exhibiting at library and health conferences in the State and by offering classes. The liaison, health professionals and librarians in Kansas work collaboratively to contribute to the work of the MidContinental Region's special projects liaisons.
