Headquarters Sensitive Waste Disposal Program

TEMPORARY RELOCATION OF FORRESTAL BURN BAG FACILITY

Effective September 2, 2008 through September 30, 2008, the Forrestal Burn Bag Facility, located in Room GI-007, will temporarily relocate due to the ongoing DOE/General Services Administration Sprinkler Project.  During this period, burn bags may be brought to the Mail Center Control Room - GM-134.  Burn bag service for Germantown and L’Enfant Plaza customers will not be affected by this closure.

The hours of operation in the Mail Center Control Room are:  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

All paper waste must be packaged in the appropriate bag size and type and may not exceed 10 pounds per bag.  If you have questions and/or concerns, please contact Ellsworth Howell (586-4375).

Programs that accumulate sensitive waste exceeding their office storage areas should take the overflow material to the vault in room GI-007 in Forrestal.  Germantown customers must call (301) 903-4483 to coordinate opening the vault.  Forrestal customers may bring their overflow materials to GI-007, (202) 586-1364, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m.

Due to a change in destruction procedures, ALL WASTE must be delivered to the overflow rooms in the appropriate bags and MAY NOT exceed 10 pounds per bag.  For your information, 10 pounds equals two reams or 4 inches of paper.  When bagging sensitive waste, please follow the guidelines contained in the DOE Headquarters Facilities Master Security Plan, Chapter XI, Section 13, "Paper, plastics (including floppy disks) and metal (including metallic computer disks and removable drives) must be sorted into separate burn bags.  Paper clips, staples and metal or plastic fasteners must be removed from all paper documents and waste."

Burn bags are available in the supply stores at both locations.  The large waste bags used by the cleaning crew are NOT acceptable.
