Extramural Programs Branch

The Extramural Programs Branch oversees the extramural research programs of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), administering and supporting individual research grants; large, multidisciplinary center grants; institutional training grants; programs of pre- and post-doctoral fellowships; career awards; and minority awards, in support of the Human Genome Project (HGP). The branch plans and directs extramural research programs that develop new methods and technologies to determine DNA sequence. It supports efficient strategies for constructing and annotating genetic and physical maps, and for identifying, mapping and sequencing genes, coding regions and other functional elements of genomic DNA.

The branch also administers a program that explores the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of genomics research, to help develop policies and guidelines regarding the impact of human genome research on biomedical practice, and provide expertise on issues pertaining to genomics research for the directors of the Division of Extramural Research and the NHGRI.
