Millennium Challenge Corporation Releases 2007 Annual Report
Report Highlights MCC Programs are Changing Lives
Washington, DC – The Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) today released its 2007 Annual Report summarizing how MCC programs are changing the lives of the poor in partner countries. The report chronicles MCC’s achievements, specifically developments during fiscal year 2007, to reduce poverty through economic growth and, as a result, positively impact some of the world’s poorest people in 40 countries worldwide.
MCC CEO Ambassador John Danilovich noted in the report, “With early results on the ground, MCC is poised for further success as our compacts and threshold programs reach full implementation. The progress made to date will help MCC deliver a wide range of significant and sustainable results that will stimulate economic growth, reduce poverty, and make a real difference in the lives of the poor around the world.”
The 2007 Annual Report is structured around three main themes—who we are, what we do, and why we do-what we do—to help educate American taxpayers, members of Congress, partner countries, nongovernmental organizations, and other stakeholders about how MCC is a unique approach to reducing poverty through economic growth.
For instance, the report documents how MCC compacts and threshold programs are improving the lives of the poor by:
- Improving the long-term security and diversification of Georgia’s natural gas supply and providing Georgian citizens and businesses with electricity and heat during cold months.
- Providing technical assistance to over 7,500 farmers in Madagascar.
- Training journalists in Malawi and Tanzania on investigative reporting techniques to bolster press freedom.
- Building 132 “girl-friendly” school complexes in Burkina Faso. In the 2006-2007 school year, over 12,400 students were enrolled in these schools, of these more than half were girls. A recent analysis reported an attendance rate of 95 percent.
- Providing technical assistance and development services to thousands of farmers and rural entrepreneurs in Nicaragua.
