President Bush's Malaria Initiative Launches in Kitgum, Uganda
The Honorable Alex Kamugisha, State Minister for Primary Health; USAID/Uganda Mission Director Margot Ellis; and many other local and national dignitaries launched President Bush’s Malaria Initiative in Kitgum, Uganda, on January 25 at the Labuje internally displaced persons camp.

U.S. Jump-Starts the President's Malaria Initiative and Ushers in Expanded Resources for Angola and Tanzania
On December 15, USAID announced that barely six months after the unveiling of the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), the first major activities under the program had begun in Angola and would start the following week in Tanzania.

First Beneficiaries Receive Help Under President Bush’s Malaria Initiative
More than half a million Angolans will be the first recipients of assistance under President Bush's Malaria Initiative, the White House announced December 15.

$11.5 Million Programmed for PMI Activities in Tanzania for 2005–2006
The funding is part of $1.2 billion pledged for 15 sub-Saharan African countries over the next five years. Tanzania, Uganda, and Angola are the first three countries selected for initial assistance.

U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative for Tanzania Launched in Zanzibar
The President’s Malaria Initiative for Tanzania was launched on December 19 at the Mahonda Police Football Grounds in Zanzibar. As malaria is highly preventable and treatable, an opportunity now exists to effectively combat this disease in Tanzania and throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Karume Inaugurates Isles Grand Antimalaria Campaign
Zanzibar President Abeid Amani Karume has launched a grand antimalaria campaign, popularly known as “Kataa Malaria,” in the Isles and has urged the entire population to rally behind it to fight hard against the country’s leading killer disease.

Indoor Spraying Fights Malaria in Angola
In December, five months after President Bush announced a $1.2 billion Africa malaria initiative, the U.S. Government launched a large-scale indoor spraying program in Angola, where 300 insecticide-spraying pumps cleared customs on their way to begin spraying in southern Angola.

WHO Calls for an Immediate Halt to Provision of “Single Drug” Artemisinin Malaria Pills
The World Health Organization (WHO) today requested pharmaceutical companies to end the marketing and sale of “single drug” artemisinin malaria medicines in order to prevent malaria parasites from developing resistance to this drug.

On January 19, Michael Miller, USAID's Deputy Assistant Administrator for Global Health, testified before the Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information and International Security Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, about U.S. Government malaria prevention and treatment programs.

USAID Reforms Agency Malaria Programs for Greater Effectiveness
While the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI) ramps up over the next five years to cover 175 million people, expectations of both the White House and Congress are that all malaria prevention and treatment programs will function in the same results-based and accountable fashion as the PMI.

Thousands of people attended the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) kickoff for Tanzania on December 19, 2005, at the Mahonda Police Football Grounds in Zanzibar. The President of Zanzibar led the event, which was also attended by delegates from the U.S. Embassy; the U.S. Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention; the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the World Health Organization; the United Nations Children's Fund; and several nongovernmental organizations.
