New Jersey RCFL Help Expose School Bombing Hoax

Investigators are still trying to determine why a minor from New Jersey posted an online threat against the student body of Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, North Carolina. What authorities do know, thanks in part to the computer forensics experts from the New Jersey RCFL (NJRCFL), is the identity of the sender. Investigators also know the threat was nothing more than an empty threat.

On August 18, 2008, the threat was posted on the World of Warcraft, an online role playing game. The FBI traced the Internet Protocol address to an individual with a New Jersey address—prompting the involvement of the NJRCFL. The staff worked around the clock analyzing the primary suspect’s computer and provided their findings to investigators. The primary suspect, a juvenile, initially denied any involvement according to press reports. However, as the investigation continued, the suspect confessed and officials announced that the threat to ignite propane bombs and shoot people on the first day of school was indeed a hoax.

Because the suspect is a minor, his/her identity has not been revealed, and it is not yet known what charges the suspect will face. The investigation is ongoing.
