NCUA Emphasizes Financial Literacy at Capitol Hill Event

April 28, 2008, Alexandria, Va. – In recognition of “National Financial Literacy Month,” representatives from the National Credit Union Administration’s (NCUA) Office of Public and Congressional Affairs answered questions and distributed materials regarding financial literacy to Members of Congress and congressional staff at the Jump$tart Coalition’s Financial Literacy Day event held today in the Hart Senate Office Building to highlight the growing importance of financial literacy.

“As Chairman of the MyMoney.Gov Website Subcommittee, I am pleased with the important impact NCUA and the credit union community are making regarding financial literacy. I firmly believe financial literacy is fundamental to enabling consumers to follow a path of financial health and independence. Financial education is a natural extension of the “people helping people” philosophy prevalent throughout the credit union community. Furthermore, I appreciate the continued Congressional involvement and advocacy of this vital public policy initiative,” stated Chairman Johnson.

The National Credit Union Administration is the independent federal agency that charters and supervises federal credit unions. NCUA, with the backing of the full faith and credit of the U.S. government, operates the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), insuring the savings of nearly 87 million members in all federal credit unions and the vast majority of state-chartered credit unions. NCUA is supported by credit unions, not federal tax dollars.
