Homing Ability in Animals

Question - I am writing an article for a class that I am
taking geared toward children ages 6-11. I would like any insight
that you can provide on how my dog was taken 150 miles away and
jumped out of our truck and showed up at our house 1 month
later. Another situation happened to a friend of mine who had a
squirrel living in his attic. He got a have-a-heart trap and
carried it away. It kept returning time and time again, since he
had painted its tail, he knew it was the same squirrel. No matter
how many miles away he drove the darn squirrel it kept coming back.
