name Burley status educator age 50s Question - I run a church camp in the south edge of Effingham County, Illinois. Do cottonmouths come this far north? I am about a mile from the Little Wabash river, and have a 23 acre lake. According the Field Guide to Amphibians and Reptiles of Illinois, I.N.H.S., 1999. They are not that far north. They are principally found in the counties along the extreme lower Mississippi and along the Ohio River.
