C-SPAN’S LINCOLN 200 YEARS PROGRAMMING CONTINUES SAT., AUG. 2 WASHINGTON – The fifth installment of C-SPAN’s “Lincoln 200 Years” programming initiative airs on Saturday, August 2 from 8 - 10 p.m. ET. (The program re-airs at 11 p.m. ET). This month, the program features two segments focusing on Lincoln and his political nemesis, Stephen Douglas: HOUSE DIVIDED SPEECH COMMEMORATION On June 16, 1858, Abraham Lincoln famously declared that “a house divided against itself cannot stand,” in accepting the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. To mark the 150th anniversary of the event, re-enactors portraying Lincoln and Douglas, met in the Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois, to deliver dramatic readings expressing the two politicians’ views. George Buss and Tim Connors portrayed Lincoln and Douglas, respectively. Stewart Winger, assistant history professor at Illinois State University, provided historical commentary. The re-enactors faced each other in Representative Hall, where Lincoln delivered the House Divided speech. This event was co-sponsored by the Looking for Lincoln Heritage Coalition and the Lincoln-Douglas Society. THE LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATES: Panel Discussion Recognizing that the texts of the Lincoln-Douglas debates are no longer self-explanatory to modern Americans – referring to people, events and issues well known in the 1850s but no longer familiar – a panel of scholars met recently at the National Archives to discuss new interpretations of the debates and their meaning. The panel featured Rodney O. Davis and Douglas L. Wilson, who co-direct the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois. Their book, The Lincoln-Douglas Debates: The Lincoln Studies Center Edition, will be published in September. The panel was moderated by Allen C. Guelzo, author of Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates that Defined America. The Abraham Lincoln Institute sponsored the panel. Future “Lincoln 200 Years” programming will air on the first Saturday of every month from 8 - 10 p.m. ET on C-SPAN, from April 2008 to April 2009. (Each program re-airs at 11 p.m. ET).
