Postdoc Eligibility and Sponsorship

In order to be considered for a LANL Postdoc appointment, candidates must be nominated and sponsored by a member of the Laboratory's technical staff. To identify a potential sponsor, you can review the technical divisions and the science subject areas of the Laboratory. In addition, you can meet potential sponsors at national and international conferences and workshops, by networking with colleagues, or by scanning journal publications. Hiring officials look over postdoctoral resumes and contact the postdoctoral candidate (you) directly if the candidate is a good match for their needs. Selection is based on Laboratory wide competition and is determined by the candidate's academic qualifications and research excellence.

For all postdoctoral appointments, the candidate's PhD date must be no more than 5 years since the granting of the degree at the time of being proposed for review by the Postdoctoral Committee, or will have completed all PhD requirements by commencement of appointment. Requests for exceptions to the 5 year since the granting of the PhD will be considered based on extenuating circumstances.

Individuals who have conducted a significant portion of their doctoral thesis research at the Laboratory, as a GRA or other type of appointment, need to pursue a research project that shows substantial changes in topic/direction. If the proposed postdoc research is

• substantial change in research topic/direction,
• change in Laboratory advisors, and/or sponsoring organization,
• the extent to which thesis research direction was provided by Laboratory staff,
• length of graduate residence at the Laboratory
