Types of Postdoc Apppointments

spectrometer Most postdocs will be offered a Postdoc Research Associate appointment. In addition to these appointments, each year approximately 30 Postdoc Fellow appointments, including the distinguished fellows, are awarded. Initial appointments are two years, renewable for a third.

Regular Appointments

Postdoctoral Research Associates pursue research as part of ongoing LANL science and engineering programs.

Director's Postdoctoral Fellows collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers on staff initiated research. Candidates are selected by the strengths of their academic and research excellence, and proposed research. Sponsored candidates' packages are reviewed by the Postdoctoral Committee at the quarterly meetings (see Quarterly Meeting Schedule).

Agnew National Security Postdoctoral Fellows are provided the opportunity to pursue research aligned with the Laboratory's National Security missions which includes Environmental Programs, Stockpile Manufacturing, Weapons Physics, Weapons Engineering, and Threat Reduction Programs. US citizenship is required. Sponsored candidates' packages will be considered only during identified quarterly calls.

Distinguished Postdoctoral Appointments

Candidates must display extraordinary ability in scientific research and show clear and definite promise of becoming outstanding leaders in the research they pursue. Up to two appointments are awarded from each category annually. Appointments are for three years. Sponsored candidates are reviewed by the Postdoctoral Committee annually at the January quarterly meeting.

J Robert Oppenheimer(JRO) Postdoctoral Fellow -
Named after the Laboratory's first Director, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers on staff initiated research. Open to all nationalities.

Richard P Feynman (RPF) Postdoctoral Fellow in Theory and Computing -
Named after the famed theoretical physicist and winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineerings on staff initiated research in the areas of theory and computing. Restricted to US citizens.

Frederick Reines (FR) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Experimental Sciences -
Named after the former LANL researcher who won the 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers regarding staff initiated research in experimental sciences. This fellowship will be awarded to outstanding experimentalists, regardless of their field of study. Restricted to US citizens.

Postdoctoral Partnership Appointments

IC Postdoctoral Fellow -
In coordination with the Intelligence Community and the Department of Energy, collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers regarding staff initiated research in areas that have the basis for future technological developments important to the Intelligence Community. The Postdoc will work as a Laboratory postdoc for a period of up to three years. In addition to conducting research with their identified LANL sponsor, recipients of these appointments will interact with a resource person within the Intelligence Community. In addition, the recipients and LANL sponsors will travel to Washington up to two times a year to meet with other recipients of this appointment as well as visit the funding agency to gain a better understanding of its technical needs. US citizenship is required. Current Laboratory Postdocs who have been at the Laboratory for less than one year are eligible to apply for this opportunity.
