HHS Secretary Concludes Week-Long Visit to the People's Republic of China

May 16, 2008. U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael O. Leavitt finished his week-long trip to the People's Republic of China with two days in Beijing focused on the implementation of the Memoranda of Agreement (MoA) between HHS and the Chinese Government on the safety of food, feed, drugs, and medical devices, signed in December of 2007.  The Secretary began his visit to Bejing by observing the testing procedures Chinese authorities are using to check the purity and quality of heparin, at the Electrophoresis Laboratory of the National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products and the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory of the Institute of Materia Medica, both part of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) within the Chinese Ministry of Health.  He also held detailed discussions on progress under the MoA with the Commissioner of the SFDA, the Honorable Shao Mingli, and with the Honorable Li Chiangjiang, Minister of the Chinese General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).  Finally, the Secretary received a briefing from AQSIQ experts on preparations the Chinese Government and the Beijing Olympic Committee are taking to secure the food supply for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, and he toured Olympic sites with AQSIQ Vice Minister Wei Chanzhong.
