Barry B. Kaplan
Director for Fellowship Training
Photo of Barry Kaplan The NIMH, Intramural Fellowship Training Program, located in the Office of the Director (OD), is headed by Barry B. Kaplan, Ph.D., Director for Fellowship Training.

Prior to coming to NIMH in 1997, Dr. Kaplan served as Professor and Director, Molecular Neurobiology and Genetics Program, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, PA. As senior administrator, Dr. Kaplan is charged with the development and oversight of DIRP's integrated multidisciplinary training program and with providing administrative support and resources for all training-related activities.

Margarita Valencia
Assistant Training Director
Photo of M.Valencia Margarita came to the NIMH with international and domestic educational administration experience. She joined the NIMH Intramural Program in 1996 just as the DIRP Office of Fellowship Training was established. Prior to joining the government workforce, she graduated from a Masters Program in Higher Educational Administration from the Ohio State University and worked with an Educational Program for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of Indonesia. Her community organizing experience, as a professional and volunteer, includes time with a Central American Development project and with the Washington DC Council of Latino Agencies, Latino Task Force and the Mount Pleasant Festival.

Laura Ortiz
Program Specialist for Visiting and Post-Bac Fellows

Photo of Laura Ortiz Laura Ortiz came to the Office of Fellowship Training in March of 2003 to assist with the Visiting Program and the visa and immigration issues that are involved with fellows and staff in that program. Laura has a master’s degree in International Education from American University and a bachelor’s degree in East Asian Language and Culture from Indiana University. Prior to coming to the OFT, she worked for six years with international sponsored students from the governments of Kuwait and Botswana and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary.

Jill Robinson
Pre-doctoral Fellow for the Office of Fellowship Training
Photo of J. Robinson Jill Robinson joined NIMH in the summer of 2008, bringing a strong background in research and education. Her experience with youth and adult learners extends beyond the classroom, and includes work as an administrator and pair therapist at the Manville school at the Judge Baker’s Children Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Currently, she is a pre-doctoral fellow, and a candidate for the PhD in Organizational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Maryland. She coordinates the program evaluation component for the Office of Fellowship Training.

Amy Yang
Special Events Coordinator for the Office of Fellowship Training
Photo of A Yang Amy Yang came to the Office of Fellowship Training in June of 2008 as a Special Events Coordinator. She works closely with both the Fellowship Training and the Scientific Directors Office on planning, coordinating and executing various special events. Amy has a BA in International Studies from American University. Prior to coming to the NIH in September of 2005 she was a flight attendant with US Airways and America West Airlines.
