               ELLEN VERGOS NAMED U.S. TRUSTEE FOR REGION 8


     WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Attorney General Janet Reno has
appointed Ellen B. Vergos to serve as the United States Trustee
to oversee the administration of bankruptcy cases in Kentucky and
Tennessee, the Department of Justice announced today.
     Vergos, who will assume her duties on January 9, has been a
partner at the Memphis, Tennessee, firm of Waring Cox since 1984. 
Vergos practiced extensively in the bankruptcy courts since 1981,
representing both debtors and creditors in cases filed under
chapters 7, 11, and 13.  Her principal office will be in Memphis.
     She previously worked in Nashville where she was an
associate with the law firm of Farris, Warfield & Kanaday.
     Vergos received her Juris Doctor in 1976 from Memphis State
School of Law and her bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt
University in 1972.  Upon graduation from law school, she served
for one year as a Law Clerk in the United States District Court
in Memphis.

     Vergos served as president of the Tennessee Lawyers'
Association for Women and is on the Board of the Memphis Bar
Association and the MidSouth Commercial Law Institute.  She also
is an Assistant Bar Examiner on the Tennessee Board of Law
examiners and a member of the Hearing Committee for the Board of
Professional Responsibility.  She also is a member of the Shelby
County Health Care Board, on the YWCA Board of Directors and is
actively involved in many other civic and charitable
organizations.
     Vergos is married and has three children.
     As trustee, Vergos will oversee the administration of
bankruptcy cases in Region 8, which encompasses the federal
judicial districts of Kentucky and Tennessee.
