U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission Welcomes The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Festival of Flight 2003 as Partners

Organizations to Join Celebration of 100 Years Of Powered Flight

Washington, D.C.
Nov. 18, 2002

At a recent U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission meeting in Dayton, Ohio, the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission and the First Flight Centennial Federal Advisory Board members announced two new official Partners in the national Centennial of Flight: Born of Dreams - Inspired by Freedom commemoration -Fayetteville's Festival of Flight 2003 and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The two organizations will join forces with the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission and ten other partner organizations to create awareness for the 100th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered flight.

"The national Centennial of Flight celebration is going to be a success largely because of our Partners," J.R. "Jack" Dailey, Chairman of the U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission and Director of the National Air and Space Museum, said. "The strong educational initiatives of Festival of Flight and the FAA will play an important role in educating the next generation of inventors; their efforts will help us reach our goal of informing as many people as possible. We are pleased to have them join the commemoration and look forward to an exciting year."

Festival of Flight 2003 will be an 11-day celebration of the achievements in aviation, encompassing both a look back at the heritage of flight and a look to the future of aviation and space travel. The event, which will be held in Fayetteville, N.C., will include an art festival with a variety of aviation-inspired fine art, music and drama; a hot air balloon launch; kite-flying demonstrations; general aviation and military air shows; a seven-day exposition covering some 120,000 square feet of exhibit space; and daily fly-overs of 1910, 1911 and 1912 Wright Brothers replicas. Festival of Flight has placed a significant emphasis on education, and will compel students' interest in aviation and flight technology through interactive exhibits, celebrity speakers and a live satellite link with the International Space Station. Students will also have exclusive access to the exposition and a yearlong, statewide educational program. (http://www.festivalofflight.org/)

The Federal Aviation Administration began incorporating Centennial of Flight themes in its Aviation Education program in 1998 - the 95th anniversary of the Wright brothers' first powered flight. The agency has a number of events planned across the country and is teaching aviation history and its own achievements in classrooms, at teacher workshops and in museums. FAA also added new features to its Web site, "The Wright Stuff," which can be found online at www.faa.gov/education.

Other partners in the Centennial of Flight: Born of Dreams - Inspired by Freedom celebration include: American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA); Aviation Week's The Next Century of Flight; Aviation World's Fair 2003; EAA; First Flight Centennial Commission and First Flight Centennial Foundation of North Carolina; Inventing Flight: Dayton 2003; NASA; the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum; and the U.S. Air Force.

The U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission was created by Congress to expand national and international interest in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of powered flight through a national awareness campaign, Centennial of Flight: Born of Dreams - Inspired by Freedom.
