James B. Burch - Assistant Inspector General
 Mr. Burch accepted this position on October 15, 2007, after retiring from almost 28 years as a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service. He served in Nashville and Knoxville, TN; Washington, DC; and Lexington, KY before returning to Washington to accept management positions in both protection and investigations.
His last assignment (2004-2007) was as the Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office, where he had oversight of all Secret Service criminal investigations and protective responsibilities in the National Capital Region. This encompassed the coordination responsibility for four National Special Security Events, including activities surrounding the 55th Presidential Inauguration in 2004.
From 2002-2004, Mr. Burch served as the Deputy Assistant Director for the Office of Investigations in Secret Service Headquarters. In this capacity he was responsible for the coordination and implementation of Secret Service investigative efforts and policy on a national and international basis. He was responsible for the administration of all major field offices, implementation of the investigative budget and liaison with other federal government departments and agencies.
From 2001-2002, Mr. Burch served as the Special Agent in Charge of the Special Services Division within the Office of Protective Operations. In this capacity he supervised the design, purchase and production of the Secret Service's armored vehicle fleet as well as the oversight of the security screening for all mail and other deliveries to Secret Service protected facilities, including the White House Complex.
From 1996-2001, Mr. Burch served as an Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Vice Presidential Protective Division. During this assignment he coordinated security preparations and supervised the actual physical security for the Vice President and his family members.
From 1992-1996, Mr. Burch served as the Agent in Charge of the Lexington, Kentucky, Resident Agency Office and supervised all investigative and protective missions undertaken by the Secret Service in the Eastern District of Kentucky.
Mr. Burch received a B.A. Degree from Birmingham Southern College in 1973, where he was a member of the varsity basketball and tennis teams. He began his career as a high school basketball and tennis coach before entering the U.S. Secret Service as a Special Agent in 1980.
Mr. Burch is married and has two grown daughters. |
