What is this job like? Back to Top Back to Top

Designers have a desire to create. They mix knowledge with artistic ability. Designers focus on a specific area of design such as cars or Web sites.

The first step is to find out why the design is important to the client. They must think about the size, shape, weight, and cost of the design.

Designers make drafts or drawings by hand or with a computer. Most use computer-aided design (CAD) tools. Designers need up-to-date computer and telephone equipment.

Most specialize. Some work in more than one area. For example, commercial and industrial designers develop man-made products like toys and furniture. Fashion designers make clothing and accessories like belts and hats. Floral designers cut and set up live, dried, or fake flowers into designs. Graphic designers use computer software to design newspapers and other publications. More graphic designers are making Internet Web pages. Interior designers plan the interiors of places like homes, offices, and hotels. Merchandise displayers and window dressers, or visual merchandisers, plan and set up windows and interiors of retail stores. Set and exhibit designers create sets for movie, television, and theater productions.

Designers may work in their own office or in their clients' homes or offices. They set their schedules to please their clients. They may work long hours, including evenings or weekends, to meet deadlines.

Some may travel. Those who are paid by contract are under pressure to please clients and to find new ones to keep a steady income.

Designers must have an eye for color and detail. Being creative is also important. Designers also need problem-solving skills and communication skills, and they must be good with computers.

Most designers need formal training after high school. Some attend a professional design school or get an associate degree, but in general most need a bachelor's degree. It is typical for fashion and graphic designers to get a degree in the fine arts. Industrial and commercial designers usually get a degree in architecture or engineering. A few designers, like floral designers, learn their skills on the job.

New interior, graphic, and industrial and commercial designers get on-the-job training for 1 to 3 years. Fashion designers usually get their training through summer internships or by working in retail. Some designers may decide to become teachers in design schools. Some open their own design businesses.

How much does this job pay? Back to Top Back to Top

In 2006, earnings of designers varied widely. For example, the middle half of all floral designers earned between $17,690 and $27,330. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $15,040. The highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $33,650. The middle half of all fashion designers earned between $42,140 and $87,510. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned less than $30,000. The highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $117,120.

How many jobs are there? Back to Top Back to Top

Designers held about 603,000 jobs in 2006. About 3 out of 10 were self-employed. Many self-employed designers also had another job in design or in some other occupation.

What about the future? Back to Top Back to Top

Employment of designers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2016. The demand for better and safer products will mean more jobs for industrial and commercial designers. As homeowners and businesses have more money to spend on design, more interior designer jobs will be created. As Internet business grows and more companies advertise their products, there will be a need for more graphic designers. Employment of fashion designers is expected to grow more slowly than average because very few people leave the occupation and there are a small number of job openings. Eloral designers are expected to experience moderate declines in employment.

Most designers are expected to face keen competition for jobs, because many talented people are attracted to a career in design. However, job opportunities should be good for floral designers as many people leave the occupation due to low pay.
