Collaborations

The Sleepers River site is administered jointly by the USGS and the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) in Hanover, NH.  We share the responsibility of some of the core data collection activity and management of the current and historical data.  CRREL maintains an active research presence at Sleepers River, some of which is collaborative with the WEBB study.  In particular, we have collaborated on study of the layered seasonal snowpack.

State University of New York, College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse  has a strong presence at Sleepers River primarily through the involvement of Prof. Jeff McDonnell (now at Oregon State University), Prof. Elizabeth Boyer,  and students.  We've had three M.S. projects completed, one near completion, and one Ph.D. student who has completed his field work.  In addition we have had one M.S. student each from Dartmouth College and the University of New Hampshire.

We collaborate with the USDA Forest Service in a hydrologic and biogeochemical comparison to the Hubbard Brook watershed.  Scott Bailey of the Forest Service at Hubbard Brook is using the site as a base-rich end member in a study of the role of Calcium (Ca) cycling in sugar maple health, and is also applying a till source model.  We have had extensive interaction with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) in soils mapping of the project area (Roger DeKett), and Joe Homer of NRCS is collaborating with Scott Bailey on the sugar maple project.

A National Science Foundation (NSF) grant with co-PI's Jeff McDonnell (Oregon State University), Rick Hooper (USGS),  Carol Kendall (USGS) and Keith Beven (Institute of Hydrology, Wallingford, United Kingdom) funds four Ph.D. projects, including one at Sleepers River.  This project examines hillslope / riparian interactions at two WEBB sites - Sleepers River and Panola Mountain, as well as the Maimai catchment in New Zealand.
