About the NIST Research Library

Location & Hours

• West end Administration Bldg. 101, E Wing
• NIST personnel and guest researchers access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Service Desks staffed Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. except holidays
• Library is closed to the public 

Library Collections

• Over 200,000 science, engineering, and technology volumes
• Current subscriptions to over 1,000 scholarly journals
• Electronic resources, including Web-based databases and journals

 NVL (NIST Virtual Library)

• Accessible from your desktop with an Internet connection at http://nvl.nist.gov
• Access to the full range of databases from your home computer using remote access options

Library Services

Reference/Consulting

• Information Desk: phone (x3052) or e-mail
• General, scientific, and legislative reference service
• Literature searching, current awareness, and citation analysis
• Research consulting services available for long-term project assistance

Circulation

• Charge out NIST Research Library materials 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Requests accepted by phone (x2793), NVL, or online catalog REQUEST option
• Holds placed or renewals made in person, by phone (x2793), e-mail, or online catalog REQUEST option

Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

• Photocopies of articles from journals held by the NIST Research Library sent to you usually within two business days.
• Interlibrary Loan (ILL) of items the library does not have usually arrive within five to ten business days
• Requests are made via ILLiad.  Read Frequently Asked Questions about ILLiad
• Usually no charge for these services.  For more information, call x3981, or see our Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery policy. 
• Other libraries and non-NIST employees should consult our Lending and Copying policy.

Library User Education & Tours

• Monthly demonstrations of NIST Virtual Library access to information resources and services
• Tours of the NIST Research Library (by request; call x3052 or e-mail)
• Classes and tours are free (call x3052 or e-mail for more information, or place a training request through the NVL)
