National Human Genome Research Institute Advisors

Research conducted at or sponsored by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) undergoes peer review by advisory committees who review extramural grant applications and intramural research programs. Committee members represent leading investigators in all areas of genetics, biology, biochemistry, information science and engineering. Behavioral and social science disciplines such as public health, health policy, law and economics are also represented and serve to inform issues of the ethical, legal and social implications of human genome research, a major component of genomic research and NHGRI's programs.

Selection for committee membership takes into consideration equitable geographic distribution, as well as representation by minorities and women.

• The National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research
  Provides second-level peer review for grant applications to NHGRI 's extramural grant program and establishes program priorities and goals for NHGRI in its pursuit of furthering the understanding of human genetics.
  
  
• The Division of Intramural Research Board of Scientific Counselors
  Reviews and evaluates NHGRI's intramural program and the work of individual investigators in the Division of Intramural Research.
  
  
• The National Human Genome Research Institute Initial Review Group
  Conducts initial peer review of grant applications to NHGRI and currently has one subcommittee: the Genome Research Review Subcommittee.
