Osage-Skiatook Petroleum Environmental Research

Short Description of B-site,
(SE/4 Section 29 and NE/4 Section 32-T22N-T11E)

The following production and site information are from the Bureau of Indian Affairs office in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. This lease was initially drilled in 1938. The initial target was the Bartlesville Sand, however, the productive unit is the Cleveland Sand. This sand occurs at depths of 850-1,000 feet below the surface. Oil is localized by a small, northeast-trending dome with about 35 feet of structural relief that extends from the north half of SE/4 Section 30, NE/4 Section 32, and SE/4 SE/4 Section 29-T22N-T11E. The initial production was solution-gas driven.

The image is a aerial photo taken in 1991 and shows the area on the shore of Skiatook Lake where petroleum production activities are on going. The red dots are the locations of the monitor wells installed for the research project. Placing the cursor over items on the image will pop up a label to identify the items. Items identified include normal lake area, saltwater pipelines, tanks, pits to contain spills, salt scar areas, and the monitor wells. Clicking the image will zoom into a larger image.

Additional drilling occurred on the lease from 1947 to 1951. Water flooding* was initially investigated in 1948 and began in late 1951 when a single injection well was drilled into the productive unit and used to test the potential for waterflooding. A full-fledged waterflood was proposed in March, 1953 and began shortly thereafter.

In January 1953, there were 10 producing wells on the lease averaging 21 bbls/day total production. Through January 1953 the lease had produced a little less than 110,000 bbls, about 1,900 bbls of that production was believed to have been generated by the waterflood test.

* Water flooding is the reinjection of brine water from petroleum production through selected wells back into the producing horizon to maintain reservoir pressure and drive the remaining oil to collection wells.
