William E. Anderson
William E. Anderson, Portfolio Accountability Manager
NASA Headquarters
William E. Anderson serves as Portfolio Accountability Manager in the Office of Education at NASA Headquarters, Washington, D.C. In this position he manages the strategic alignment of the entire portfolio of NASA education projects, including those conducted by the Office of Education, the NASA Centers and the NASA Mission Directorates. His role is to help ensure that all NASA education projects effectively support the agency’s education objectives and provide unique NASA support for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education throughout the nation. Prior to this assignment, Anderson served as Partnership Manager for Education in the Aerospace Technology Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters, overseeing a broad spectrum of education projects focused on NASA aeronautics and other aerospace research. As a participant in the NASA Congressional Fellows Program, Anderson served on Capitol Hill in 2006 as Legislative Assistant in the office of Congresswoman Thelma Drake (2nd District, Virginia), coordinating her service on the House Education and the Workforce Committee.

Prior to moving to NASA Headquarters, Anderson served as Pre-College Officer in the Education Programs Office at NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. In his position as the Education Programs Office lead education technical specialist, he coordinated the activities of a group of educators responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of education resources, technology and delivery systems for pre-college NASA education programs and initiatives. As part of this assignment, Anderson served for one year as the NASA representative to the Interagency Learning Technologies Office, or ILTO, in the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. In this role he helped coordinate joint education technology efforts between several federal agencies, and he helped manage the Technology Innovation Challenge Grant program, a major initiative to promote the innovative use of new technologies to enhance pre-college education programs in schools throughout the country.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Anderson attended Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tenn., and David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tenn., where he received a bachelor's degree in English in 1969. He earned a master's degree in special education at Memphis State University in 1976, and he has additional postgraduate credit in aerospace education.

From 1969 to 1976, Anderson taught junior high English and special education classes in the Memphis public school system. From 1976 to 1982, he served as a NASA aerospace education specialist. He conducted science education programs for schools, radio, television, civic groups and other educational organizations.
