The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) has replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. Beginning January 2002, all federal statistical data for reference will be NAICS based. Here are the NAICS categories for medical with the basic changes from one classification to the other:

  • 339112 Surgical and Medical Instrument Manufacturing. Formerly SIC 3841. Note: no longer includes operating tables (now Laboratory Apparatus and Furniture Manufacturing 339111), nor tranquilizer guns (now Small Arms Manufacturing 332994).
  • 339113 Surgical Appliances and Supplies Manufacturing. Formerly SIC 3842. Note: no longer includes electronic hearing aids (now Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Manufacturing 334510), nor incontinence and bed pads (now Sanitary Paper and Product Manufacturing 322291). Now includes intra ocular lenses.

  • 339114 Dental Equipment and Supplies Manufacturing. Formerly SIC 3843.

  • 339115 Ophthalmic Goods Manufacturing. Formerly SIC 3851. Note: no longer includes Intra ocular lenses (now Surgical Appliances and Supplies Manufacturing 339113).

  • 334510 Electromedical and Electrotherapeutic Apparatus Manufacturing. Formerly SIC 3845. Note: no longer includes CT and CAT Scanners (now Irradiation Apparatus Manufacturing 334517).

  • 334517 Irradiation Apparatus Manufacturing. Formerly SIC 3844. Note: now includes CT and CAT Scanners.

Medical Device Industry Shipments, Earnings and Expenditures

  • The U.S. shipped $19 billion in surgical and medical instruments in 1999, followed by $11 billion in electromedical and electrotherapeutic apparatus.
  • The highest average hourly wage is in X-ray and irradiation apparatus manufacturing, at $17.55 an hour in 1999, the lowest average hourly wage is in dental equipment manufacturing, at $13.13 an hour.
