Flood Summary for Georgia, March 8-15, 1998

Updated March 18, 1998

Heavy rains fell over most of central and southwest Georgia on March 3-4 and again on March 7-9, 1998. Maximum rainfall amounts for March 7-9 totaled as much as 8-10 inches in certain areas of southwestern Georgia. Most of the other flood affected areas received about 5-8 inches of rain for the three-day period. This heavy rainfall on already saturated ground caused flooding in the Savannah, Ogeechee, Altamaha, Satilla, Suwannee, and Flint River basins, and localized urban flooding in the Atlanta area.

Peak discharges on many streams in central and southwestern Georgia had recurrence intervals ranging from around 10 years to greater than 100 years. The most significant flooding in southwest Georgia occurred in the Flint River basin, with numerous streams having recurrence intervals ranging from around 25 years to greater than 100 years. New peaks of record were recorded at Spring Creek near Colquitt of 15.91 feet and at Spring Creek at Iron City of 24.65 feet. Peak-flow data have been collected at these gages for the past 17 and 56 years, respectively.

In central Georgia, the most significant flooding occurred in the Altamaha River basin. Several streams in the basin had recurrence intervals ranging from about 10 years to greater than 100 years. New peaks of record were recorded on 4 streams in the basin. These streamflow stations are fairly new, having only 6 to 15 years of peak-flow data available.

The table below contains the preliminary USGS peak-flow data collected for the period of March 8-15, along with recurrence intervals (as applicable) at selected active streamflow stations within the affected basins.
