Honda's new Prius-fighting small hybrid will reach showrooms next April, a Honda official told an industry conference yesterday.  Reuters reports that Honda "aims to sell 200,000 of the new hybrids globally, with about half of them in North America."

The vehicle, which looks remarkably Prius-like, will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show this October.  Honda plans to price the car well-below the Prius, with base models beginning at low as $18,850.

It has not officially been named, though Honda spokespeople have disputed internet reports that the vehicle will revive the Insight name.

Edmunds Inside Line reports, "The small hybrid is one of four new gas-electric models that Honda plans to roll out over the next four years, as part of a broad global strategy to boost hybrid sales to 500,000 units by 2012. The vehicle will be Honda's first dedicated hybrid since the Insight and is known inside the company as the New Dedicated Hybrid Vehicle or 'small hybrid.'"

Autoblog Green reports that, in addition to the slate of new hybrids, several Honda diesels may be coming our way.  Honda has reportedly decided to focus on hybrid powertrains with the smaller models in its lineup.  "For the bigger models, they have decided diesel is the way to go. The first diesel model will show up next year in the Acura lineup, most likely starting with the TSX. According to Automotive News, diesels will then spread to the Honda side of the house starting with the Accord and CR-V."
