The least expensive hybrid is actually the best-selling; funny how that works. The 2008 Toyota Prius starts at an MSRP of $21,500 for the base trim, which is less expensive than the 2007 model because Toyota ditched cruise control and miscellaneous options to lower the price for 2008 base model.
But you should take into consideration government incentives that often can add up to $1,000 or more in tax credits when you buy an alternative fuel vehicle, which are mostly hybrids.
Toyota’s federal tax credit has expired, but the next least expensive hybrid’s has not: The Civic, which starts at $22,600, has a $1,050 credit available from the federal government if you buy one in 2008.
Now you may have a more difficult decision, whether to buy the Prius or Civic hybrid? For some suggestions, see this Ask.cars.com post where we address that very question.
