The Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission announced today that Commissioner A. Paul Anderson has assumed his duties at the Commission. On August 22nd, President Bush announced the recess appointment of Mr. Anderson to be a Federal Maritime Commissioner for the remainder of a 5-year term expiring June 30, 2007. He replaces former Commissioner Delmond J.H. Won. Mr. Anderson was nominated by the President on April 11, 2003, however the Senate did not act on the nomination prior to adjournment.

Mr. Anderson comes to the Commission with extensive experience in maritime matters and government operations. For the past 9 years, he gained valuable exposure to local, State and Federal government as the Vice President for Government Relations at JM Family Enterprises, a diversified automobile business headquartered in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Between 1987 and 1994, he worked in Port Everglades, Florida, as the Director for Public Affairs, Assistant to the President, and Marketing Manager for Hvide Marine, Inc. (now operating as Seabulk, Inc.); a diversified marine transportation company with tanker, offshore supply vessel, tug boat, and barge operations. His prior work included serving several years as Special Assistant to U.S. Senator Paula Hawkins, as well as extensive work with maritime trade associations.

Mr. Anderson also brings to the Commission significant leadership experience through various positions he has held in numerous public and private organizations including serving as the Chairman, Board of Trustees, Broward Community College; Chairman, Board of Directors, Broward Alliance, the economic development agency for Broward County; member of the Orange Bowl Committee; and member of the Board of Directors, Public Affairs Council.

Mr. Anderson graduated from the University of Florida in 1982, and is a 1997 graduate of the Program for Senior Managers in Government, Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Mr. Anderson is looking forward to working with his fellow Commissioners, participating in the many challenging decisions and issues facing the Commission, and working to ensure that shippers, and regulated entities such as ocean common carriers, ocean transportation intermediaries and ports are provided with an efficient and nondiscriminatory ocean transportation system.

Chairman Blust remarked that he is "looking forward to working with Commissioner Anderson," and believes that "his experience with the business realities of the maritime industry will be of great value in helping the Commission to effectively execute the various shipping statutes administered by the Commission."

Chairman Blust also thanked Commissioner Won for his 9 years of service to the Commission. "Although I have only had the pleasure of working with Del for the past year, I have come to know him as a truly dedicated Commissioner with a genuine desire to promote a competitive and equitable trading environment in our ocean trades. He has served the Commission well since 1994 and he will be missed. The other Commissioners join me in wishing Del the greatest success in his next endeavors."
