The National Center for Electron Microscopy (NCEM) is one of the world’s foremost centers for electron microscopy and microcharacterization. Located adjacent to the University of California, Berkeley, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, NCEM features several unique instruments, complemented by strong expertise in computer image simulation and analysis. NCEM also maintains one-of-a-kind instruments for imaging of magnetic materials, and develops techniques and instrumentation for dynamic in-situ experimentation.
Established in 1983 as a US Department of Energy user facility, NCEM has hosted hundreds of visiting US and international scientists. Visiting researchers and center facilities are supported by resident scientific and technical staff who themselves are well-know experts in their fields. In addition to providing valuable guidance to visiting researchers, NCEM's staff scientists conduct their own specialized research.
The Center is counseled by a Scientific Advisory Committee comprised of distinguished scientists from academia, national laboratories and research institutions throughout the U.S. and abroad. Access to NCEM facilities is granted to researchers whose formal proposal submissions are reviewed and accepted by an external Proposal Review Committee. Additionally, an active NCEM User Association, governed by a User Executive Committee provides a channel for exchange of information between the facility and its users.
