COMMERCE APPLIES ANTI-SUBSIDY LAW TO CHINA
Washington - The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced its preliminary decision to apply U.S. anti-subsidy law to imports from China. This is the first time countervailing duties will be imposed on imports from a non-market economy. The decision alters a 23-year old bipartisan policy of not applying the countervailing duty (CVD) law to non-market economy countries, and reflects China's economic development. (more)

STEEL IMPORTS FOR February 2007 DECREASED 10 PERCENT FROM January 2007 - March 27, 2007
Newly released preliminary government figures covering steel imports for the month of February 2007 show that steel imports decreased 10 percent from January 2007 levels. (more)

U.S. Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services, Albert A. Frink has agreed to join NIMS at this years SkillsUSA in Kansas City, MO. Secretary Frink will be the NIMS guest of honor at the annual judges' dinner for the Precision Machining Technology Competition (PMT). Secretary Frink will also be the featured speaker at the Youth Development Foundation Luncheon. The PMT competition will be held on June 21 and 22 and will feature over 70 contestants from secondary and post-secondary educational programs.  Over 80 volunteers make the contest happen.

Secretary Frink heads the President's Manufacturing Counsel. He is chief advocate for the U.S. manufacturing and service sectors within the federal government and brings 30 years of private-sector experience to the position.

Commerce Deputy Secretary David Sampson hosts the sixth meeting of the Manufacturing Council at the National Institute of Standards and Technology - Gaithersburg, MD. The council discussed U.S. manufacturing competitiveness. Two recommendations made by the Subcommittees on U.S. Competitiveness and the Subcommittee on Advocacy and International Trade were also discussed. (More) - June 16, 2006

International Visitation to the U.S. Continues Growth into 2006. The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced that 2.9 million international visitors traveled to the United States in January 2006, an increase of 11 percent over January 2005. “As we approach National Tourism Week, it is encouraging to see a continuing trend of increased visitation to the United States,” said Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services Al Frink.
