OPEN LETTER TO AVHRR DATA USERS AND INTERESTED PARTIES:

Dear User,

Production of the 8km resolution Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) data set (1981-2000) was terminated at the GES DAAC facility in September, 2001 and AVHRR data products are no longer supported or distributed by the DAAC. This includes all HDF tape products and FTP binary products.

We suggest users consider using the GIMMS AVHRR Vegetation Index data product (1981-2003) which is available from the University of Maryland Global Land Cover Facility (GLCF), (please contact the GLCF directly if you are interested in GIMMS data for the years 2003-2006). Please be aware that the GIMMS data product uses TIFF format and was produced using a different algorithm to that used to generate the original PAL data products and contains only the NDVI parameter.
