Locating Out-of-print Publications

1. The U.S. Geological Survey Libraries in Denver, CO, Reston, VA, Menlo Park, CA, and Flagstaff, AZ each contain nearly complete sets of USGS publications and state geological survey publications. Requestors may go to a USGS library, or request their local library to borrow the publication from the USGS. Information on the USGS Library System is available.

2. Out-of-print publications also may be found at the state geological surveys, and at larger state and university libraries (select a state from map, below). Some have interlibrary loan capabilities, but publications can at least be read or copied on-site.

3. Federal and state government publications also are made available to the public at "depository libraries" across the country. A complete list of depository libraries is available. Many of these libraries are "selected" depositories and may not contain earth science listings. Libraries listed as "Regional" (see map below) received all federal publications distributed by the Superintendent of Documents and, therefore, should have USGS publications.
