HHS Deputy Secretary Leads U.S. Delegation to the State Funeral for Deceased Zambian President

September 4, 2008 – The Honorable Tevi D. Troy, Ph.D., Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services, led a U.S. Presidential Delegation to the State Funeral of His Excellency Levi Patrick Mwanawasa, President of the Republic of Zambia.  Deputy Secretary Troy attended a church service at the in honor of the late Zambian leader and laid a wreath during the burial ceremony.  He also met with The Honorable Brian Chituwo, M.D., Minister of Health of the Republic of Zambia.  The two discussed the positive impact the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) have had on the health of the Zambian people, Minister Chituwo’s vision for the future of health care in Zambia, and opportunities for continued collaboration in the treating HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis in Zambia.  Deputy Secretary Troy also visited Chreso Ministries which provides counseling, testing, and support for people living with HIV/AIDS through funding from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
