BG Alan R. LynnChief of Staff
Brigadier General Alan R. Lynn is the Defense Information Systems Agency Chief of Staff. He coordinates the efforts of a 6,600-member organization and manages a 6-billion-dollar-plus budget. He directs staff efforts to provide effective global command, control, and combat support systems for the President, Secretary of Defense, Combatant Commanders, Joint Staff, military departments, and combat support agencies.
BG Lynn graduated as an ROTC Distinguished Military Graduate from the California University of Pennsylvania, California, PA, with a degree in English in 1979.
He was commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery Officer and served as a Chaparral and Stinger Platoon Leader, Air Defense Fire Support Officer and C Company Executive Officer, 1-51st Air Defense Artillery Battalion with the 7th Infantry Division, Ft. Ord, CA. After the Air Defense Artillery Advance Course and learning Italian at the Defense Language Institute, he commanded the 1-34th United States Army Artillery Detachment, a Nike Hercules missile, special weapons warhead team, in Ceggia, Italy. Then in 1984, he commanded the 1-34th United States Army Artillery Detachment, a Nike Hercules missile, special weapons warhead team, in Ceggia, Italy.
BG Lynn Branch transferred to the Signal Corps and served initially as the 5th Signal Command Training Officer in Worms, Germany. Then in 1986, he commanded the 324th Signal Company, 72d Signal Battalion in Karlsruhe, Germany, in support of USAREUR Main.
Following his second command, the Signal Officer Advance Course, and the Air Force Information Systems Officer's Course, he served with the 101st Airborne Division as a Division Radio Officer. In 1990, he served as the 1st Infantry Brigade Signal Officer, 101st ABN DIV, in Saudi Arabia and Iraq, during DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM.
After Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, KS, he returned to Europe and served as S-3, 97th Signal Battalion in Mannheim, Germany. While in the S3 position, he was selected to command the newly formed 414th Signal Company as a Field Grade Company Commander, supporting Land Forces Central Europe (LANDCENT).
BG Lynn then served as the Signal Branch Lieutenant Colonel's Assignment Officer and the Lieutenant Colonel Command Program Manager in PERSCOM (HR COMMAND), digitizing their manual command slate process.
In 1997, he commanded the 13th Signal Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood, TX, and Task Force Eagle, in Bosnia.
After being awarded a Masters Degree in National Resource Management from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF) in 2000, BG Lynn was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, J6, at the Pentagon, as an Action Officer for the Network Management Division. Following the 11 September attack on the Pentagon, he was selected as Division Chief for the CINC Operations and Support Division, J6.
BG Lynn took command of the 3d Signal Brigade, Fort Hood, TX, in 2002. He deployed the Brigade to 66 locations throughout Iraq in January 2004, creating the largest tactical communications network in the history of the Army. (continued)
In 2005, BG Lynn was assigned to the Chief Information Officer/G6 Office as a Division Chief for LandWarNet Integration Division and then was selected as the Executive Officer, CIO/G6.
In 2007, BG Lynn became the Chief of Staff of the Defense Information Systems Agency, Arlington, VA.
BG Lynn's awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal; a Legion of Merit; two Bronze Star Medals; Defense Meritorious Service Medal; two Meritorious Service Medals; three Army Commendation Medals; Army Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; South West Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon with 5 device; NATO Medal; Kuwait and Saudi Arabia Kuwait Liberation Medals; and parachutist and air assault badges.
